Our community theater is preparing a small production, and I am helping choose a wig for one of the characters. We already have a dark coat and a light scarf, which leaves the wig as the most noticeable remaining color choice. The shortlist currently contains warm brown, cool brown, and subdued red; buying all three would stretch our small costume budget. My search for a clearer vocabulary for warm and cool shades led me to a discussion reference about color analysis as a starting point for further reading. It seems like background for the conversation; our character design may call for a different effect from an ordinary personal look. A sample looks different in the rehearsal room than near the stage, and I want the final choice to account for that. Should we begin with a daylight comparison and then repeat it on stage, or do the costume and stage lights take priority? Please share a workable way to compare these options together, so the decision does not depend entirely on one volunteer’s first impression.
